English Diary: Sunday Roast in England 20220502 #2-81

Hello everyone, thank you for coming back to my channel. This is the Nomadonomado English diary for the 2nd of May 2022.

Yesterday, it was raining all day. Although it was Sunday, we didn’t do any outdoor activities because of the weather.

In England or at least the area where I have stayed, roasting food is a typical meal on Sundays. So we had a Sunday roast for dinner last night as well.

Sunday roast basically is the food cooked in the oven. It could be beef, pork, chicken or lamb with potatoes or parsnips.

Parsnip is a popular vegetable in England. It’s a kind of funny vegetable. The shape looks like a carrot, but it’s white. The texture is almost like a potato, sweet and soft, but it also has a distinctive aroma.

We can buy it in Canada but it’s not cheap. Because my husband likes parsnips we have tried to grow them in our vegetable garden a few times but they never worked. We may try and grow them again if we can buy the seeds.

Anyway, Sunday roast is normally served with boiled vegetables such as carrots, cauliflower or broccoli. We must not forget about Yorkshire puddings.

Yorkshire puddings are often served with Sunday roast. It’s called pudding but it’s not the pudding that Japanese people imagine. It’s not sweet, more like savoury. It looks like a tart or a small pie but it doesn’t have anything inside.

Apparently, it’s not easy to make. My mother in law is very good at making Yorkshire puddings so she baked them for dinner yesterday. However, one of my sisters-in-law who is a semi-professional chef, cannot make them.

So it was our Sunday roast yesterday. We had roast beef with horseradish sauce which is spicy like wasabi as well as roast potatoes and parsnips served with Yorkshire puddings, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, and cabbage.

That was about yesterday and today is also a holiday in England. But my husband works because it’s not a holiday in Canada where his head office is located.

My flight to Japan is on Friday so I have to go to have a PCR test tomorrow. I am going to book the test today and need to plan a train trip to get there.

Tomorrow, we are going to watch the football game again in Bournemouth. My PCR test will be conducted in Bournemouth too. So I plan to go for a PCR test alone in the afternoon and wait for my husband and his brother to come to Bournemouth. We will meet in a pub and then go to the football match which starts at seven, after having fish and chips.

Alright, that’s all for today. Thank you for listening as usual. I hope you liked this episode. I will be very happy to receive your comments, feedback and questions. Don’t forget to check the English script on my website too, Nomadonomado.com

Thank you again and I will be back to you soon. Until then, goodbye.
