Recipe for Spicy Chicken Soup: in English #2-38

スクリプト:

Hello everyone. Thank you for tuning in. This is Nomadonomado English version. My name is Mai, and I am the host of this channel. I usually speak Japanese in my episodes, but I started talking in English recently because I want to improve my English speaking skills and my pronunciation.

Today, I’m going to share some tips for explaining orders and work processes in English. There are some useful phrases that you can use when you explain how to use the machines or how to cook some food or whatever. For example “first” or “at first” “secondly”, and then “and then” etcetera.

Using these phrases, you can indicate the orders and steps. And when you are reaching the end of the procedures, you can also use “at last” or “finally”.

When you want to talk about some steps that should be done before something else, you may want to say “after doing something-something, you can do this and that” or “you can do like this before doing something-something.”

Those techniques are also helpful when you tell the stories that happened to you, but you need to be careful with English tenses when you share your stories in the past, such as the past tense, the present perfect and the past perfect.

It will be a little more complicated for English learners, so I’m going to pick up the example from my recipe blog so that you can always use the present tense.

At the same time, you may find some new, specific terms and words when you read the recipes. I think the same thing happens when you read a recipe in Japanese. There are some technical terms that are specifically used in recipes. You may think it’s not very easy, but after you get used to them, those phrases will become familiar to you.

Now, let’s move on to my recipe. This is an easy recipe for chicken soup that inspired me when we travelled in Mexico. To be honest with you, I am not very sure that it was authentic Mexican food, but it was one of my favourite dishes that we had in Mexico and I took the recipe back home.

First of all, you need to prepare a bit: Cut the onions, carrots and sweet peppers into pieces.

Chop the garlic and the coriander stalks into small pieces and cut the chicken into pieces, season with salt and pepper.

And then, you can start cooking. At first, you need to fry the chicken in a frying pan. This is for removing any excess fat from the chicken. Secondly, put the chicken and the other ingredients including green olives, chillies, bay leaves, white wine and water in a saucepan and cook. After all of the ingredients have softened, place them on a plate and serve with a quarter of a lime.

Did you spot the words and phrases which illustrate the orders and steps?  Like “first of all”, “and then”, “secondly” and ” after”. Those can be the clues when you understand the procedures in English. So, please note them and use them when you have a chance.

That’s all for today. Thank you for listening. I hope you enjoyed this episode. I’m always happy to receive your comments, feedback and questions. If you want to see the script, it’s available on my website. Please visit nomadonomado.com.
